What is Celebrex?
Celebrex is taken to treat osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis, menstrual pain, or pain. It is used in familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) to decrease the number of polyps (growths) in the rectal area. It may also be used for other conditions if it is determined by your doctor.
What should I tell the doctor before taking Celebrex?
- you are allergic to any ingredient in Celebrex
- if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
- you have had a severe allergic reaction (eg, severe rash, hives, trouble breathing, growths in the nose, dizziness) to aspirin, an NSAID (eg, ibuprofen), or a sulfonamide (eg, sulfamethoxazole)
- if you have high blood pressure, blood disorders, bleeding or clotting problems, heart problems (eg, heart failure), or blood vessel disease, or if you are at risk for any of these diseases
- you have recently had or will be having bypass heart surgery
- you have severe liver problems
- if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
- if you have a history of kidney or liver disease, diabetes, or stomach or bowel problems (eg, bleeding, perforation, ulcers)
- if you have a history of swelling or fluid buildup, asthma, growths in the nose (nasal polyps), or mouth inflammation
- if you have poor health, dehydration or low fluid volume, or low blood sodium levels, you drink alcohol, or you have a history of alcohol abuse
- if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal product, or dietary supplement
How to take Celebrex? Use Celebrex as it was prescribed by your doctor. Read the label on the medicine. Take Celebrex orally with meals if it upsets your stomach, and with full glass of water. Do not take double dose. Do not lie down for 30 minutes after you take Celebrex.
What drugs may interact with Celebrex?
- Fluconazole or probenecid because they may increase the risk of Celebrex 's side effects
- Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors (eg, enalapril) or diuretics (eg, furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide) because their effectiveness may be decreased by Celebrex
- Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), aspirin, corticosteroids (eg, prednisone), heparin, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) (eg, fluoxetine) because risk of stomach bleeding may be increased
- Cyclosporine, lithium, methotrexate, or quinolones (eg, ciprofloxacin) because the risk of their side effects may be increased by Celebrex
Tell your doctor about all drugs that you take.
What side effects may I notice while taking Celebrex?
- severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; trouble breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue);
- red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; yellowing of the skin or eyes;
- sudden or unexplained weight gain;
- constipation; diarrhea; gas; nausea; sore throat; stomach upset; bloody or black, tarry stools; change in the amount of urine produced; dark urine; severe vomiting; shortness of breath;
- heartburn; chest pain; confusion; fast or irregular heartbeat;
- hearing loss; ringing in the ears; numbness of an arm or leg; one-sided weakness; vision or speech changes;
- dizziness; headache; depression; fainting; fever; mental or mood changes; seizures; unusual tiredness or weakness;
- stuffy nose; unusual joint or muscle pain;
- swelling of hands, legs, or feet; unusual bruising or bleeding.
Consult your doctor about any side effects that you have felt.
