Uses For Nitrofurantoin:
Macrodantin is an antibiotic which is used to cure and prevent urinary tract infections. The effect by which Macrodantin kills bacteria is unknown. It is well absorbed from the gut and reaches high concentrations in the urine where it destroys the bacteria responsible for these infections.
What should I tell my doctors before I take this medicament?
Doctors need to know if you have any of these circumstances:
- severe kidney disease
- if you are urinating less than usual or not at all
- if you are in the last 2 to 4 weeks of pregnancy

- kidney disease
- anemia
- diabetes
- glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency

Macrodantin passes into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not take this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast feeding a baby. Do not give Macrodantin to childen younger than 12 years old.
Side effects that you should report to your medic as quickly as possible:
- pale skin, easy bruising, unusual weakness
- shortness of breath, running out of breath easily
- fever, chills, cough, chest pain
- jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
- numbness or tingling
- diarrhea that is watery or bloody
Side effects which generally do not require medical care (make known to your medic if they continue or become bothersome):
- bloating or gas, constipation
- feeling dizzy or drowsy
- vomiting
- vaginal itching or discharge
- blurred vision
- rust-colored or brownish urine
- headache

What may this medicine affect?
Before taking Macrodantin, tell your physician if you are taking:
- magnesium salicylate (Doan's Pills, Mobidin, Momentum)
- choline magnesium salicylate (Tricosal, Trilisate)
- probenecid (Benemid)
- sulfinpyrazone (Anturane)
