Recognized uses include pinworm (Enterobius vermicularis), roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides), whipworm (Trichuris trichiura), and hookworm (Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus) infections. How Vermox Is Used

Vermox tablets should be chewed thoroughly before they are swallowed. For someone who has difficulty chewing, the tablet may be crushed and mixed with a small amount of food as directed by a healthcare professional. Mebendazole can generally be taken with or without food, and fasting, dietary restriction, and laxatives are not ordinarily required.

General dosing for adults and children 2 years of age and older depends on the type of infection. A single 100 mg tablet is commonly used for pinworm, with another dose sometimes recommended after about two weeks because medication kills worms but does not reliably eliminate eggs already present in the environment. For roundworm, whipworm, hookworm, or mixed susceptible infections, a typical regimen is 100 mg in the morning and 100 mg in the evening for three consecutive days. These are general regimens, not individualized instructions; a prescriber should determine the schedule based on the identified parasite, age, health history, and response to treatment.

Mebendazole begins interfering with susceptible worms after it reaches the intestine, but there is no precise symptom-relief time that applies to everyone. Mebendazole is generally well tolerated during standard short courses. Commonly reported adverse effects involve the digestive tract and include abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and gas. Some abdominal symptoms may also result from the infection itself. Headache or dizziness can occur, although mebendazole is not generally expected to impair driving or the use of machinery.

Serious reactions are uncommon but require prompt attention. These include severe allergic reactions, extensive rash or blistering, seizures, hepatitis, substantial changes in liver test results, and blood disorders such as neutropenia or agranulocytosis. Hair loss and blood or liver abnormalities have been reported more often with higher doses or prolonged treatment than with standard short regimens. Urgent medical help is appropriate for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, a blistering rash, seizure, yellowing of the skin or eyes, unusual bruising, or signs of a serious infection.

Mebendazole is contraindicated in anyone with known hypersensitivity to mebendazole or another tablet ingredient. Pregnancy calls for an individualized benefit-risk assessment: available human data have not identified a clear association with major birth defects or miscarriage, but animal studies found embryo-fetal effects. Limited case reports indicate that mebendazole is present in human milk, while its effects on a breastfed infant and milk production remain uncertain. Carbamazepine and phenytoin may reduce mebendazole exposure by increasing its metabolism, while cimetidine may increase blood levels. Routine laboratory monitoring is not generally necessary for an otherwise healthy patient receiving a standard short course. Lack of improvement or rapid recurrence may call for repeat testing or a different treatment rather than automatic retreatment with mebendazole.

Vermox tablets should be stored at 68°F to 77°F, with excursions permitted from 59°F to 86°F.
