FAQ

Check the package label for sildenafil, the stated strength of 50 mg or 100 mg, and the dosage form, which should be tablets. Also compare the manufacturer name, lot number, expiration date, and tablet imprint when one is present.

Common side effects include headache, flushing, nasal congestion, indigestion, dizziness, and temporary visual changes such as blurred vision or altered color perception. Seek urgent medical care for chest pain, fainting, sudden vision or hearing loss, or an erection lasting more than 4 hours.

Description

Zenegra is an oral tablet built around sildenafil, the same active compound found in several well-known erectile dysfunction treatments. We carry Zenegra in 50 mg and 100 mg strengths, and this guide walks through how the tablet works, how it is generally used, what to watch for, and how to store or dispose of it once you no longer need it.

Zenegra Overview

Composition and Active Ingredients

Each Zenegra tablet contains sildenafil, supplied as sildenafil citrate, and belongs to the phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor class of medicines. We offer the 50 mg strength in packages of 30, 60, 90, or 120 pills. The 100 mg strength is available in packages of 30, 60, 90, 120, 180, 270, or 360 pills. The strength describes the amount of sildenafil in each tablet, while the package quantity describes the number of pills supplied.

Use Cases

Sildenafil is established for treating erectile dysfunction in adult men. During sexual stimulation, nitric oxide signaling raises cyclic guanosine monophosphate, or cGMP, in erectile tissue. Sildenafil inhibits PDE5, the enzyme that breaks down cGMP, helping smooth muscle relax and increasing blood flow to the penis. This can support an erection firm enough for intercourse, but sildenafil does not create sexual desire or cause an erection without sexual stimulation.

After an oral dose, effects typically begin within about 30 to 60 minutes and may support erectile response for roughly 4 hours. This does not mean that an erection should persist for 4 hours. A high-fat meal taken beforehand can slow absorption and delay onset, and response varies with the person, dose, food, health conditions, and level of stimulation. Sildenafil citrate is authorized for human medicinal use in the United States, and Zenegra contains this established active ingredient.

Prescription Requirement

In the United States, oral sildenafil tablets for erectile dysfunction are prescription medicines. A licensed prescriber should evaluate whether sildenafil is appropriate, select the dose, and issue a prescription before the medicine is dispensed. Our pharmacist team is available 24/7 by phone, online chat, and email if you have questions about Zenegra, its general use, or the information supplied with the medicine.

General Dosing and Warnings

How and When to Take Zenegra

Sildenafil for erectile dysfunction is generally taken as a single dose approximately 1 hour before anticipated sexual activity, although it may be taken from about 30 minutes to 4 hours beforehand. A common starting dose is 50 mg. A prescriber may increase the dose to 100 mg or reduce it to 25 mg based on response, side effects, other medicines, age, and kidney or liver function. The 50 mg and 100 mg tablets we offer are two established strengths for erectile dysfunction, but the available package strength does not determine the right dose for an individual.

Swallow the tablet with water. It can be taken with or without food, but a heavy or high-fat meal may make it take longer to work. Do not take more than one dose in a 24-hour period, and do not exceed the dose prescribed. Taking more does not guarantee a better erection and can substantially increase adverse effects. Sildenafil does not protect against sexually transmitted infections or prevent pregnancy.

Response should be assessed over properly timed attempts rather than after only one use. If the medicine repeatedly does not work, do not increase the dose on your own. Timing, food, stimulation, an underlying health condition, or another medicine may be contributing, so discuss the result with a prescriber. Blood pressure, adverse effects, and ongoing cardiovascular suitability may also need review.

Missed Dose

Because Zenegra is taken as needed before sexual activity rather than on a fixed daily schedule, a traditional "missed dose" does not usually apply. If a planned dose was skipped and sexual activity is no longer anticipated, wait and take the next prescribed dose when it is next needed. Do not take an extra tablet to make up for a skipped dose, and never take two doses close together.

Suspected Overdose

Taking more sildenafil than intended can increase the frequency and severity of headache, flushing, indigestion, dizziness, visual disturbances, low blood pressure, fainting, and other adverse effects. A prolonged, painful erection lasting more than 4 hours, known as priapism, is a medical emergency because delayed treatment can permanently damage erectile tissue.

If an overdose is suspected, call the US Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 for immediate guidance. Call 911 or go to an emergency room for collapse, trouble breathing, severe dizziness, chest pain, sudden vision or hearing loss, or an erection lasting longer than 4 hours. Bring the Zenegra packaging if practical so responders can identify the strength and possible quantity involved.

Precautions

Allergy Warnings

Zenegra should not be taken by anyone with a known hypersensitivity to sildenafil or any of the tablet's inactive ingredients. Signs of a serious allergic reaction can include rash, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, wheezing, and difficulty breathing. Stop taking the medicine and obtain immediate medical help if these occur. An allergy history unrelated to sildenafil or its formulation is not, by itself, a reason to avoid this tablet, but all known medicine allergies should still be reported to the prescriber and pharmacist.

Health Condition Warnings

Sildenafil is contraindicated for anyone using nitrate medicines, including nitroglycerin or isosorbide products, because the combination can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure. Recreational substances known as "poppers" may also contain nitrates and must not be combined with sildenafil. Sildenafil should not be used with riociguat because both medicines can lower blood pressure.

Sexual activity places additional demand on the heart. People with cardiovascular disease, chest pain, a recent heart attack or stroke, serious rhythm problems, heart failure, or uncontrolled high or low blood pressure should be evaluated before using sildenafil. Stop sexual activity and seek urgent medical care if chest pain, severe dizziness, or nausea develops. Do not take a nitrate for chest pain after sildenafil; tell emergency professionals when the last dose was taken so they can select appropriate treatment.

Additional caution is appropriate for people with significant liver or kidney impairment, active peptic ulcer disease, bleeding disorders, retinitis pigmentosa, a history of non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, anatomical deformation of the penis, or conditions that increase the risk of priapism. These include sickle cell disease, multiple myeloma, and leukemia. Older adults and people taking alpha-blockers or medicines that increase sildenafil exposure may need a lower starting dose. A prescriber should review the complete health history before treatment.

Side Effects

The most commonly reported side effects of sildenafil include headache, facial flushing, indigestion, nasal congestion, nausea, dizziness, and temporary visual effects. Visual changes may include blurred vision, increased sensitivity to light, or a bluish tinge to colors. These effects are often mild and temporary, but dizziness or altered vision may make driving or operating machinery unsafe. Wait until you know how the medicine affects you before doing either.

Seek prompt medical attention for severe or persistent adverse effects. An erection lasting longer than 4 hours requires emergency treatment. Sudden vision loss in one or both eyes may be a sign of a rare optic-nerve event, while a sudden decrease or loss of hearing can occur with ringing in the ears or dizziness. Stop sildenafil and obtain urgent care for either event. Chest pain, fainting, a severe allergic reaction, marked shortness of breath, or an irregular heartbeat also warrants immediate assessment.

Mild effects that repeatedly interfere with normal activities should still be discussed with a prescriber. A dose adjustment or a different erectile dysfunction treatment may be more appropriate than continuing to tolerate troublesome symptoms. Report when an effect began, how long it lasted, and whether it occurred with food, alcohol, or another medicine.

Medicine Interactions

Sildenafil interacts with several categories of medicines and substances. Nitrate medicines, whether taken regularly, occasionally, or recreationally, must not be combined with sildenafil because of the risk of severe hypotension. Riociguat is also contraindicated. Alpha-blockers prescribed for high blood pressure or an enlarged prostate can compound sildenafil's blood-pressure-lowering effect. A patient should be stable on the alpha-blocker before sildenafil is introduced, and a prescriber may choose a lower starting dose.

Other PDE5 inhibitors, including tadalafil, vardenafil, and avanafil, should not be taken with sildenafil. Combining erectile dysfunction medicines has not been shown to add reliable benefit and can increase adverse effects. Other sildenafil-containing products, including formulations used for pulmonary arterial hypertension, also contribute to the total dose and must be disclosed.

Medicines that inhibit the CYP3A4 liver enzyme can increase sildenafil exposure. Examples include ketoconazole, itraconazole, clarithromycin, erythromycin, cobicistat, and some HIV protease inhibitors. Ritonavir can cause a particularly large increase and requires specific dose and timing limits determined by a prescriber. CYP3A4 inducers such as rifampin may reduce sildenafil exposure and effectiveness. Grapefruit or grapefruit juice may also increase exposure in some people, so ask a prescriber or pharmacist whether it should be limited.

Significant alcohol intake can worsen dizziness, low blood pressure, and difficulty achieving an erection. Other blood-pressure-lowering medicines may add to lightheadedness or fainting, even when the combination is not strictly contraindicated. Share a complete list of prescription medicines, nonprescription products, supplements, and recreational substances with the prescriber and pharmacist before starting Zenegra.

After Using the Medicine

Storage

Store Zenegra tablets at 68°F to 77°F in a dry place, away from excess moisture, heat, and direct light. Keep the tablets in their original packaging until use, and keep them out of reach of children and pets. Avoid storing the medicine in a bathroom cabinet, near a sink, or anywhere subject to high humidity. Do not use tablets that are expired, damaged, discolored, or stored under unsuitable conditions without first asking a pharmacist.

Disposal

When Zenegra is no longer needed or tablets have expired, do not leave loose tablets where another person, child, or pet could reach them. A community drug take-back program is the preferred disposal option. Many pharmacies and local authorities provide permanent collection sites or scheduled take-back events.

If no take-back option is available, follow current FDA household-disposal guidance. Remove the tablets from their packaging, mix them without crushing with an undesirable substance such as used coffee grounds or kitty litter, place the mixture in a sealed bag or container, and put it in the household trash. Remove or obscure personal information on prescription labels before recycling or discarding the packaging. Do not flush sildenafil unless specific official disposal instructions direct you to do so.

Tablet Alternatives

Other products containing sildenafil may differ in brand, inactive ingredients, dosage form, strength, and directions even though they share an active compound. Viagra is the best-known sildenafil citrate tablet and provides a direct branded comparison with Zenegra. Our listings for Viagra Professional, Viagra Super Active, Viagra Soft, and Kamagra provide additional sildenafil-based options. Check each product page for its listed presentation and strength rather than assuming that products with the same ingredient are interchangeable. Readers interested in the active ingredient rather than a particular brand can also review our sildenafil listing.

Beyond sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil, and avanafil are PDE5 inhibitors used for erectile dysfunction. Tadalafil has a substantially longer period of potential activity, while vardenafil and avanafil have different timing, dosing, and interaction considerations. A longer duration is not automatically better; the most suitable option depends on health conditions, other medicines, expected timing, response, and adverse effects.

Non-tablet approaches include vacuum erection devices, injectable or urethral medicines prescribed for erectile dysfunction, and counseling when anxiety or relationship factors contribute. Testosterone is appropriate only when testing confirms a relevant deficiency and a clinician determines that treatment is indicated. Any switch between sildenafil products, another PDE5 inhibitor, or a different treatment approach should be discussed with a prescriber.
